I’M AT PRESENT READING Black Water by Joyce Carol Oates. The novel concerns a young woman, Kelly Kelleher, who, after a drunken party on a small island in Maine named Grayling Island, makes the fateful decision to drive back and catch the ferry to the neighbouring island (Boothbay Harbor) with an older politician, called simply The Senator. When they get lost, and their car crashes off a bridge into a lagoon off Old Ferry Road, Kelly tragically drowns, while The Senator swims away.

His word: New Year resolutions

I WAS PHONED RECENTLY BY A LADY journalist from this very newspaper, inquiring as to whether or not I would be prepared to tell her my new year resolutions. The answer, I’m afraid, was no — not because I felt my privacy might especially be breached by such an admission but because I have never in my life made any new year resolutions.
