One of the joys of not being on the television as much as I used to be is that it allows me to travel more on public transport. Not that I was ever exactly mobbed on it, but I was stared at, which was enough, in a captive space, to make me feel uncomfortable. Now, I still get stared at, but with less intensity and/or curiosity, unless I draw attention to myself, which generally I don’t.

So I’ve started twittering. I resisted for some time, not really getting it, but now a combination of feeling left out, being badgered by friends, and not wishing to appear fuddy or indeed duddy has made me dive headlong into that overpopulated cyber bird’s-nest. There was a specific catalyst. I dipped my toe into the Twitter waters late last Sunday night, by posting an opinion about how Jacqui Smith claiming her husband’s porn bill on expenses was the funniest news story of recent memory, and the responses back were so entertaining it made me think that this was a global cocktail party conversation I’d be happy to keep listening to.
